nStaten Island's Memorial Day Parade.

Memorial Day Weekend is a time of reflection and remembrance of those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. Staten Islanders often celebrate the weekend by spending time with family and friends, honoring our veterans, or taking part in acts of volunteerism within their community.

As your Staten Island North Shore Expert, I have compiled a list of events taking place on Staten Island this weekend that are sure to keep you and your family busy and having fun!

Memorial Day Parade

This year’s Staten Island Memorial Day Parade will take place on Monday, May 27, 2013, starting at noon.  The 2013 parade will begin at Forest Avenue and Hart Boulevard, and is expected to have over 1,500 participants.  Why not come out and thank our veterans while applauding Staten Island’s Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops and high school marching bands?

2013 marks the 33rd annual Staten Island Advance Memorial Day Run , sponsored by the Staten Island Advance  and Staten Island University Hospital . The run/walk begins at 9:00am and covers 4 miles along Father Capodanno Boulevard. This year’s run will begin and end at the Father Capodanno entrance to Miller Field.

Staten Island Beaches

The beaches are open!  The New York City Parks Department  has announced that many Staten Island Beaches will be opening this weekend. These beaches include South Beach, Midland Beach, Cedar Grove, and Wolfe’s Pond. Why not take a walk along the beach this weekend?

Looking to volunteer at a park this weekend?  Many Staten Islanders will be displaying their acts of service at Westerleigh Park, Eibs Pond Park and the Staten Island Greenbelt .

Staten Island Zoo

ATKA is at the zoo!  Come visit the Staten Island Zoo for a chance to see ATKA, the “ambassador wolf” of the Wolf Conservation Center, who is making an appearance at the Staten Island Zoo this Saturday.  But even if you don’t get a chance to see ATKA, the zoo has much more to offer- including a petting zoo, pony rides, and many exhibits.

Whether you participate in volunteerism, attend the parade, visit a park, or just barbeque in your backyard this weekend, I hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend!  As your North Shore Expert, I encourage you to celebrate the weekend by enjoying your time with family and friends, and by remembering all of our heroes who have sacrificed themselves for others.   Happy Memorial Day!
